Beny
Hello. I’d like to thank you for this opportunity to give a talk.
My name is Tomo. I live in the US for 2 years. I work as a researcher at University of ●●●●.
Today I’d like to talk about how I use online English lessons. I love to learn English at online English schools. Because learning English at online English schools has many merits to me. So far, I have had online English lessons for a year.
When I came to the US two years ago, I had a strong Japanese Katakana accent and had a hard time for communicating with English speakers. At that time I didn’t take this language difficulty so seriously. I thought that my English must be getting better with time because I was in the US. One year later, I realized my English was still not good. The bad thing to me was that my boss and my coworker were all Japanese. So, I had less opportunity to talk in English.
Then I luckily found the web sites of online English schools. I immediately realized that these schools were really helpful to me. I had been looking for chances to speak English and also teachers who could correct my mistakes. Through chatting at online lessons I learned daily conversational phrases and correct pronunciations. And not only speaking lessons I had writing lessons, too. Moreover, I practiced my presentations for academic meetings with some teachers who have scientific backgrounds. As I talked, online lessons are very flexible. I enjoyed this flexibility so much.
One month ago I registered with English Power since one of my English learning friend, RD, introduced English Power on her blog. As RD strongly recommended American Accent Training (AAT) lessons, I started to have AAT lessons with teacher Wilma. AAT lessons were really fantastic. After 1 month lessons, I myself found my speaking and also listening skills were dramatically improved.
Other than the content of the lessons, I found a new way how to use online English lessons more effectively. For AAT lessons I used the textbook. Until then, I have never used commercially available textbook for my online lessons. It was a great experience. Wilma explained the essence of the textbook and I reviewed the details using the textbook after the lessons. This method of learning promoted my understanding of the textbook. And Wilma is a wonderful pacemaker for me. Basically I am a lazy person. For example, when I start to learn something using textbooks, the textbooks will be put away on my bookshelf within 3 days and never come back on my desk. But this time Wilma did not allow me to do that. Wilma let me run or made me run. Wilma is strict enough to be a good pacemaker for me. Through these lessons, I found online English teachers can be good pacemakers for me.
The purpose of my English learning is to communicate well with other researchers in English and obtain many ideas for my research. This time the communication means presentation and discussion in academic meetings and reading and writing scientific papers. A variety of English skills were required to do these. It might take time to improve my English skills, but I have no doubt that the flexibility and pacemaker function of online lessons will strongly support me to accomplish the purpose. So, I’ll continue to have online lessons.
Thank you very much for your attention.
